July Birthstone – Ruby
The July birthstone is Ruby.
There’s no better way to demonstrate your love than by giving a ruby in celebration of a July birthday. Rubies arouse the senses, stir the imagination, and are said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love.
Fine-quality ruby is extremely rare, and the color of the gem is most important to its value. The most prized color is a medium or medium-dark vivid red or slightly purplish red. If the gem is too light or has too much purple or orange, it will be called a fancy-color sapphire.
The Mogok valley of Upper Burma is famous as the source for the finest and rarest rubies of all, know as “pigeon’s blood” for the stones’ intense red color. Another major source of rubies is Thailand, well-known for dark, brownish-red rubies. Both Thailand and Burma regard the ruby as their national stone.
In the Orient, rubies were once believed to contain the spark of life – “a deep drop of the heart’s blood of Mother Earth,” according to ancient Eastern legends. Ancient Asian stories tell that the ruby was self-luminous. They called it “glowing stone” or “lamp stone.” It’s said that an Emperor of China once used a large ruby to light his chamber, where it glowed as bright as day

The Ruby stimulates the Heart Chakra and assists in the selection and attainment of ones ultimate values. It stimulates the loving emotional side toward nurturing, bringing spiritual wisdom, health, knowledge and wealth. Ruby gathers and amplifies energy while promoting and stimulating mental concentration. An excellent shielding stone, it protects one on all levels and safeguards ones consciousness from psychic attack.
It has been said that as long as one retains a bit of ruby, wealth will never depart. Ruby encourages to ‘follow your bliss’. Ruby will light the darkness of life, giving birth to a spark of light which progresses throughout the body and spirit, conquering darkness on all levels.
The protective abilities of the Ruby stone may be why it was so often used in the breast plates and shields of Kings and Knights of old. In our modern times, it makes an excellent stone to wear as a shielding stone. Simply carry or wear a stone so you can easily get to it and when you feel the need for protection, grasp the stone and visualize a bright red light shining out from it and surrounding your entire being.
